Ny löpare Tomi Mattila

A Finnish 23 year-old orienteerer Tomi Mattila will join IFK for the spring season of 2009. Tomi is a sucker for night orienteering and has promised to complete all the trainings he will be given and possibly a few of his own.

A Finnish 23 year-old orienteerer Tomi Mattila will join IFK for the spring season of 2009. After the junior years Tomi decided to change from Turun Suunnistajat to MS Parma and continue his journey towards big relay and respectable personal achievements. One of the main reasons to move to Göteborg was his strong believe that he hasn’t yet been able to show his full potential yet. Tomi will also sign up to HGU to continue his studies in economics which is the official reason (and financial solution) for his trip.

Back in Finland Tomi has been steadily climbing the rankings ending up at 109 after 2008 – “after being sick for most of the season”, he adds. Tomi is a sucker for night orienteering and has promised to complete all the trainings he will be given and possibly a few of his own. Over the last two year period Tomi’s been doing 1,4 night trainings per week on an average. This has given Tomi some media coverage for example in Tiomila 2007 where he came to the changeover at 8th place. One of the best achievements of season 2008 was 25th place in the Finnish championships – night orienteering of course.

IFK Göteborg was the number one choice for Tomi by recommendations from guys like Vesa Taanila, Antti Parjanne, Kim Fagerudd and Öystein Kristiansen. Tomi is confident that he’ll take a giant leap forwards as an orienteerer during the spring and help the blue-whites to success in Tiomila and Jukola while at it. Tomi will set up a training camp in Rosendal in the middle of January and has been eagerly studying the IFK’s training plan for the last few days – it’s not difficult to see that he’s very excited to meet his new team mates and get started!
